What is a nutritional consultation?

Veterinary nutrition counseling is a one-on-one consultation, where we will assess your pet’s diet, body condition, overall health, and specific needs to provide personalized dietary recommendations. During this extended 45–60 minute session, Dr. Deng will have a thorough discussion and develop a personalized nutrition plan tailored to your pet’s age, activity level, and medical status.

Common reasons to book a nutritional consultation:

  • General wellness and preventative care
  • Concerns about weight gain or loss
  • Management of chronic health conditions
  • Transitioning to new life stages (puppy, kitten, senior)
  • Choosing an appropriate diet for a newly adopted pet
  • How to incorporate fresh/home-cooked food safely
  • Gut health testing and assessment

Key aspects of the consultation include:

Individualized assessment

Consideration of your pet’s age, breed, weight, activity level, and health conditions to determine their specific nutritional requirements.

Dietary recommendations

Guidance on suitable foods (including brands and types), portion sizes, feeding schedules, and nutritional goals.

Addressing dietary concerns

Discussion of any changes in appetite, digestive issues, food sensitivities, weight changes, or feeding challenges.

Understanding pet food

Help with interpreting pet food labels, portion recommendations, ingredient lists, and avoiding

Specialized diets

Advice for pets with health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, or allergies, including therapeutic diet options.

While Dr. Deng and our team are experienced in providing general and therapeutic nutrition advice, we are not board-certified veterinary nutritionists. For more complex or highly specialized cases, we may recommend a referral to a veterinary nutrition specialist to ensure your pet receives the most appropriate care.
